★ THE ACTUAL REASON YOU BUY BOTTLES
British mains water is chlorinated, and plenty of people can smell it in a glass. So the bottles come home from the shop, the crate lives by the front door, and somebody carries it up the stairs every week. Then it becomes a recycling problem, and then it becomes an argument about the recycling.
Supermarket water is about 46p a litre. Out of the tap it's about a third of a penny.
You were never paying for water. You were paying for a smell to go away — and there's a cheaper way to do that.
★ DO THIS BEFORE YOU SPEND ANYTHING
The single most common complaint about every tap filter sold in this country is that it didn't fit. So here is the check, before the sale rather than after it.
If you're not sure, send us a photo of your tap before you order. We'd rather answer an email than process a return.

Turn the tap with the switch set to filtered and the water passes through a multi-layer cartridge before it reaches you. The supplier specifies eight layers. Two of them do the work you'll actually notice.
Activated carbon holds onto the chlorine compounds that cause the smell and the taste. This is the oldest and best-understood thing in water filtration, and it is the reason every satisfied review in this category says some version of "it tastes cleaner."
Mesh and sediment layers catch the grit, sand and rust flecks that come off older pipework between the main and your kitchen — the bits that show up as a fine dust in the bottom of a glass left standing overnight.
That's what we claim. The next section is what we don't.
It will not soften your water, and it will not stop your kettle furring up. Hard water is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Nothing that screws onto the end of a tap removes those — not this, not the expensive subscription ones, whatever the box says. If limescale is your problem, you need a softener plumbed into the mains, and that's a different purchase entirely.
We don't publish a removal percentage, because we don't have a lab test yet. Anyone can print "99%" on a box. We're not going to, and when we have an independent test on this cartridge we'll publish it here with the lab's name on it.
We make no claims about lead, heavy metals or microplastics. Same reason. The supplier says things; we'd rather have a report.
Your tap water was already safe. It's regulated by your water company and the Drinking Water Inspectorate, and this product doesn't make it safer. It makes it taste and smell like less of a swimming pool, which is the reason you were buying bottles in the first place.
★ ABOUT TWO MINUTES
1. Unscrew the tip of your tap. That little removable end piece is the aerator. It comes off by hand, or with a tea towel for grip if it's been there a while.
2. Find your adapter. There are six to eight in the box. One of them matches your tap thread — try them until one turns freely.
3. Screw the Aquara POD on and hand-tighten. Run the tap. If there's a drip at the joint, take it off and put it back on straight. That's the whole installation.
When you move out it unscrews in about ten seconds, your old aerator goes back on, and the tap is exactly as you found it.
